The European Union announced a ban on six types of phthalates, which are a family of chemicals used to make the plastics which are commonly found in children's toys more flexible. The reason for the ban is that according to latest research, when children put the toys in their mouths, they could ingest these harmful substances, subsequently causing damage to the liver, kidney and testicles.
The ban will have an immediate impact on the European toy market as finding an alternative to phthalates at such a short notice is going to be difficult.
