I must admit, I was pretty curious to try out the "Your Baby Can Read" boxed set of DVDs which proudly advertise the fact that they can help your baby to read really early! The boxed set contains 5 individual volumes of the "Your Baby Can Read" series in DVD format, plus a set of learning flashcards with large letters and pictures. The way that these videos work is that the word in question is repeated, followed by the spelling in large letters, and some pictures to associate the word with. Repitition is key here - the makers of these DVDs emphasize that the child must watch these DVDs over and over again each day, for them to actually work.
Coming down to the videos themselves, the videos are fairly dry, and nothing out of the ordinary. They could use a little more animation and sophistication. Although, I liked the fact that the words chosen are commonly used words which your child will easily come across in day to day life. The spelling flashes across the screen and tries to imprint the words in your child's mind. The pictures shown help your child to associate the word to the actual object. Your child can hone his/her phonics skills by watching these DVDs. Songs and rhymes are featured in some of the DVDs.
It's still to early to tell if my own child has learnt how to read by watching these DVDs! However, my opinion is that these DVDs are a good way to introduce spelling and reading to your child. They make much better viewing than some of the other stuff that comes on TV.

I know you wrote this some time ago, but I am very interested in knowing how it turned out. I just purchased a set for my 9month old and am trying to get as many opinions as possible.
These tapes arrived as a gift from my housekeeper. She thought she was under the impression she was only paying $14.95 for the package…she did not understand the terms of such an agreement. Her credit card was initially charged $14.95 and a month later $195.95. By the time the second charge of $195.95 posted to her credit card , the “30 day money-back guarantee” had passed and she couldn’t return it for any sort of refund. How convenient! She is a domestic service worker and doesn’t have the money for extravagant gifts. I think it is horrible of this company to take advantage of such a situation. Customer Ser vice was of no help. I am contacting the BBB.
