A local library in Greenwood, Indiana handed out 150 toy dinosaurs, some of which contained abnormally high levels of lead. Thanks to an astute librarian, the toys were tested, and the high levels of lead were discovered. According to the IndyChannel.com website, the toys were distributed by Kipp Brothers, a Carmel based company.
This leads me to wonder about the millions of toys out there which have high levels of lead as well. How do we know which toys have lead in them? There should be some sort of regulatory testing authority in place which will monitor the quality of the toys. Right now, it's very much like a guessing game which is being played. Is this toy safe or not? Does this toy pose a choking hazard? Is this toy dangerous if chewed? To play it safe, I, for one, would stick to cloth, plastic and reputed wooden toys for my kids. Hopefully, some sort of solution will arise sooner rather than later.
