Last Mother's Day my 3 1/2-year-old son worked for days on a very special Mother's Day gift for me. To hear him tell it, his preschool was replicating the Mona Lisa for each and every mother! He was bursting with excitement and couldn't wait to present his special gift.

The hat he painted for me was bright orange and very small, so it was probably more suited for hanging on the wall than wearing on the head. But I put it on with pride and wore it throughout an elegant Champagne brunch.

I got some funny looks in the buffet line as I balanced my tiny hat, orange paint flaking onto my blouse, but I think most people "got it." I wore it proudly there and I'll show it proudly here.

The mothers who read this site carefully choose appropriate toys for their children. They research and compare, read toy reviews and scan the toy recalls. I think you deserve recognition for that! Being the Toys Guide is a fun job and it feels good to help other parents, grandparents and caregivers find great toys for kids.

The strangers who complimented my hat and showered my proud little boy with praise made my day as well as his. This Mother's Day I can't imagine what he'll bring home, but I can promise that I'll cherish it forever...right on the wall inside my closet.

Happy Mother's Day!
