Brainy Baby - A Behind The Scenes Look
An Interview With Marcia Grimsley, Senior Producer/Director, Brainy Baby

From , former About.com Guide

Marcia Grimsley is a Senior Producer/Director with Brainy Baby. She has many years of experience in the Baby Video and DVD industry. Marcia was kind enough to share some of her valuable thoughts and inputs on Brainy Baby, as well as provide a behind the scenes look at the baby DVD production industry. Here is an Interview With Marcia Grimsley, Senior Producer/Director with Brainy Baby.

Q: Brainy Baby is a very well respected name in the Baby DVD market today. Can you tell us a little more about Brainy Baby, and how it got started.

Brainy Baby became the first company to pioneer infant educational videos with the 1995 development and release of the dual titles, Brainy Baby Left Brain and Brainy Baby Right Brain. These two videos, which together inspire whole brain thinking, were a breakthrough in the baby video industry. The company now has a multitude of DVD and video titles, Brainy Baby Music CDs, and Brainy Baby licensed books, toys and games.

Q: How are Brainy Baby DVDs different from other DVDs in the market today?

The Brainy Baby Company was built to provide a quality, educational base of educational products specifically for infant, toddler and pre-school children ages 6 months to 5 years, as well as providing a solid brand to extend throughout major markets. Each Brainy Baby video is 45 minutes long and designed for the parent a child to watch together. Carefully crafted with a creative mix of reality-based visuals, real children and colorful graphics, combined with both classical music and fun, kid-friendly songs, the programs are creatively paced for your viewers to capture the child's attention, and then allow for "teachable moments" to occur.

Q: Who is Brainy Baby's main competition?

To be honest, there are a lot of "baby videos" out there, but most are just "fluff" behind a clever title, and very few that are really excellent products. Our products are so unique that we rarely find anyone who has developed a product that we consider direct competition.

Q: What is the impact of children's DVD's on babies - any research, experiences, do's and don'ts of baby DVD's that you'd like to share?

There's no real study on the effect of watching DVDs for babies, only for older kids. I think Sesame Street did a study a few years ago that 3-4 year olds who watch the program did were more ready for kindergarten and scored on tests in subsequent elementary years. We suggest that parents use BB videos as one of the many learning tools that babies have. In fact, our videos are not narrative; there's no story to follow so a baby can watch for 10 minutes then go do something else.

Q: What changes would you like to see in the Baby DVD industry today?

More intelligent products, and less "eye candy" for babies (sweet and entertaining, but not a lot of real educational value.)

Q: What makes Brainy Baby good for your child?

Brainy Baby is good in several ways. The Right Brain and Left Brain stimulates approporate parts of the brain and contributes to whole brain development. Again, the videos are designed to be watched in increments. Also, we use real babies and real toys, so babies can identify with what they are seeing on the screen. A baby might see some colored balls and then go play with the same balls he/or she has at home. Remember stackable toys? We show them in our videos and I bet tons of babies at home have the same ones. We do't have any characters in our shows-real kids and real toys. Babies can relate easier to these real objects. Instead of saying a character's head is round we say that a ball is round. Kids can make the connection easier.
