Most Unique Toys of 2007

From , former About.com Guide

It's always so much fun creating the list of the most unique toys of the year. This year's unique toys range from very simple to technologically advanced. One thing that all the toys in this list have in common is the "wow" factor. The most unique toys of 2007 all have an element in them which makes them conversation stoppers! Here's a look at the most unique toys of 2007.

1. Daydream Toy Beanstalks

There was very close competition for this spot on the Top Unique Toys list between the Daydream Toy Beanstalks and Squashblox, another product from Daydream Toys. After much deliberation, the Beanstalks won, primarily because nothing comes close to them in terms of uniqueness! The Beanstalks are giant stand-alone stuffed creatures standing tall at 26". They are fabric covered and strike a pose when they stand. They kind of remind me of those sculptures you see in parks and such. Check them out if you're curious to learn more!

2. Radica UB Funkeys

There's been a lot of talk going on about the Radica Games UB Funkeys toys. The Funkeys starter kit includes 4 collectible figures: Bones, Twinx, Scratch and Lotus and a white Funkey hub, which comes with a USB cable to attach to your computer. Once connected, you can play several games associated with each figure that you plug into the hub. Earn coins by playing games and finding things and then use those coins to beautify your “crib", a Funkey World word for house. You can even post your crib online for everyone else to see. This immensely popular game has caught on with younger folks aged 8 and up. You can keep adding to the fun by buying more Funkey world figures. There are currently 14 different figures available.

3. Do You Look Like Your Dog?

Before you take offense, let me explain that I'm not trying to be rude! Do You Look Like Your Dog happens to be the name of an outrageously funny board game from Briarpatch. Players earn points (oops! sorry, bones) to find the best match between the dogs and the dog owners. The players have to explain their reasons for the best match and claim their bones all in 30 seconds. To further complicate the game, players can steal each other's bones too! Do You Look Like Your Dog is good for 3-4 players above the age of 7. It's a perfect way to liven up those holiday get togethers.

4. Zen Designs SEE Toys

The SEE toys definitely qualify as unique. These environmentally friendly toys are equipped with a mini dynamo which has to be cranked up via an attached handle. The SEE toys make noises, light up and, the best part, never need batteries. Currently, their product line includes the DynaFly, the DynaCar and similar toys based on a tiger, a shark and a dolphin. Unfortunately, once the initial novelty of cranking the dynamo wears off, there's nothing much more you can do with these rather overpriced toys.

5. Pieceless Puzzle

If someone had to suggest the idea of inventing a jigsaw puzzle with no pieces, I'd brush them off right away! But, it's been done. The Pieceless Puzzle from Ceaco is truly a marvelous invention. Imagine, no lost puzzle pieces! The Pieceless Puzzle is all one piece and made of soft flexible material. All pieces connect to each other and have to be laid out flat for the puzzle to be put together. To make things more challenging, the Simpsons Pieceless Puzzle is two-sided, so you have to really think and figure out which piece goes on the side you are working on. After you are done on one side, then you can pull it apart and work on the other side for the next round. The puzzle measures 14 X 18. It sells for $17.99 and is meant for ages 12+.

6. Cube World Digital Stick People

Now this is what I call unique! Radica Games's Cube World Digital Stick People have really taken off with both kids and adults. A "cube" is basically a digital stick figure with a personality of his own who lives within a cube. When you join two or more cubes together, you can watch the figures come to life and interact with each other. It's totally unpredictable and you never know what the cube figure is going to do. He may even go into the next cube or throw something over! Trust me, it is extremely addictive to watch the antics of the figures. Check it out!

7. Plaja Pets

Plaja Pets are plush toys .. hold on, don't brush them off yet! The Plaja Pets are plush toys with a difference. Their heads and tails can be detached and rearranged magnetically to create totally new creatures. You can't help smile when you see the Plaja Pets. The Plaja Pets come in various shapes and forms including elephant-like, rabbit-like and some unclassifiable creatures. You can create lots of combinations of the Plaja Pets depending on how many you own.

8. Fur Berries

I liked these cute toys primarily because of their sweet and simple nature. They are also unique, of course! Fur Berries are little plush balls which pop open to convert into a teddy, dog, cat etc on the press of a button. They smell good, and also reveal a special surprise hidden inside them when opened. The only thing is that they are rather highly priced keeping in mind that they are so simple.

9. Wowee Radio-Control FlyTech Dragonfly

Wowee has probably introduced the first remote control toy that flaps its wings to fly instead of the typical stationery wings or propeller driven flying toys out there. Wowee's Flying Dragonfly is undoubtedly the most unique toy of this year. According to Wowee, it is also the world’s first remote controlled flying insect. What’s more, it's ultra light weight carbon-fiber design combined with crash resistant modeling ensures that your kid (or you) will enjoy the Flytech Dragonfly for a long time. The remote control controls speed, direction and height and can be easily used indoors or outdoors due to ease of maneuvering in small areas. The wingspan is 16” and it allows for 10 minutes of flying time on a single charge.

10. Play With Your Food Game

The Day Dream Toy Company is back again with a very unique game, unique and useful enough to include it in our Top Unique toys list of 2007. Does your kid's dinner time always turn into a power struggle? Is your kid picky about what he eats? This games aims to solve this problem once and for all and at the same time liven up dinner time. Included is a melamine plate with compartments with one of two themes printed in each compartment: animals or transportation, and a cup to match. The game board has a spinning wheel and contains each of the printed animals/transportation images from the plate and cup in its circle. The object of the game is to eat from the compartment containing the picture which the arrow falls on.
