Approximately 3 weeks later, you will recieve 5 caterpillars in the mail in a sterile environment provided with food and air holes. Keep them away from excessive heat and light, and they will develop into chrysalids. Then you have to transfer these cocoons into the netting of the Butterly Habitat, and wait for the Painted Ladies to arrive! Its a beautiful feeling when they do. You have to set them free after a day.
Sometimes, one or more of the larvae may not develop fully into butterflies, but according to the Insect Lore website, at least 3 are guaranteed to do so. Kids can be involved in this project with adult supervision. The Butterfly Garden is a lovely way to introduce the concept about the cycle of life to them.
