The Bottom Line

This toy car feels solid and has lots of cool features. Its two-in-one design is unusual and the toy cars run really smoothly. I think I've just joined the legions of Hess-car collectors!

Pros

  • Two-in-one design is unusual and fun.
  • Cars move fast and run smoothly.
  • Kids love the flashing lights and sound effects.

Cons

  • The sound effects are too loud for my taste.
  • Kids must remember to switch it off or the batteries drain overnight.

Description

  • Smaller race car is contained inside the larger one.
  • Both cars have flashing lights.
  • Large car has sound effects.
  • Small car has a super fast pull-back motor.
  • Available at Hess and Hess Express retail stores.

Guide Review - Two Race Cars in One

Hess, the brand of gas stations with the green and white signs, has released a new collectible toy vehicle every Christmas since 1964 and this year's edition is especially cool. The large, white toy race car has rubbery tires, flashing lights and sound effects, then the hood opens up to reveal a smaller, green toy race car inside.

The smaller toy car also has flashing lights and a pull-back motor that works smoothly and quietly and really makes the car go fast!

Tradition that isn't old-fashion, Member Mommy_SAys

I remember my friends' brother collecting these when we were kids, so when I became her son's godmother, I started giving them to him each year. He loves them and it's something that he really looks forward to getting. The 2009 racer was his favorite ever b/c he's a big race car fan. The variety year to year has been nice -- he never gets exactly the same thing. They're modern but not overly wired. Perfect for preschool through tween years (or I guess older since my friend's brother still collects them as well.
