Before You Buy A Second Hand Toy

From , former About.com Guide

In tough economic times where money is an issue, second hand toys are a good option for many people. However, you do have to follow a few basic precautions before you go in for a second hand toy. Before you buy a second hand toy, you should consider all possible pros and cons. Buying second hand may be easier on the wallet, but before you buy a second hand toy, check it out for safety, durability and wear and tear. Here's our handy guide to buying second hand toys which will help you to make a more sensible and informed decision.

Check For Recalls

One of the most important things to do before you buy a second hand toy is to check for toy recalls. Toy recalls have been plentiful in the past few years. It's not unlikely to spot a recalled toy being sold on the internet or at thrift/consignment stores, which makes it doubly important to check for toy recalls before you buy second hand.

Wear And Tear

One of the first things you should do before you buy a second hand toy is to ask how old the toy is and how much usage has it received. Check for signs of rust and wear and tear. If you are buying online or do not have an opportunity to personally see the toy before buying, don't hesitate to ask the seller about the condition of the toy.

Try Before You Buy

If possible, try the out the second hand toy before you buy it. Check for all working and movable parts, buttons, try out sounds and other electronic features if applicable. Before you buy the toy, you should be fully satisfied that the toy is doing what it is supposed to be doing. Electronic toys are the most likely to malfunction, so be extra cautious when picking up a second hand electronic toy.

Watch Out For Clever Fakes

I've come across toys which, on first glance, looked exactly like the real thing. However, on closer inspection, they turned out to be nothing but clever copies. Before you buy a second hand toy, inspect it carefully to see if the quality of the material used to construct it looks good. Fakes usually have rougher edges, uneven paint and are made of lighter and weaker materials.

Check For Toy Safety

Checking for toy safety is probably the most important thing you need to do before buying a second hand toy. All toys need to be checked for safety and one has to be extra careful where second hand toys are concerned, as they've been used already and may be wearing out. Check out our Toy Safety Checklist for tips and pointers on toy safety.

Is The Price Right?

An important consideration in deciding whether it's worth your while buying a second hand toy is the price. It's always a good idea to compare the price of a new toy with the toy you are contemplating on buying. Prices of toys fluctuate. Last year's toys may still be available from some sellers at a discounted price. If there's a small difference in the price, you may want to consider going in for a new toy instead. Also, do your research to find new toys similar to what you want which may be selling for less.
