Many Parents Still Wary About Toy Safety

Saturday October 18, 2008
The excitement of the holiday toy buying season has set in. But in the midst of all this excitement, a glimmer of uncertainty still exists. This uncertainty stems from toy safety. After last years' toy safety fiasco, is toy safety still the burning question in most parents' minds?

iVillage's new Momtourage site commissioned a survey of parents with children under the age of 12, to find out about their ongoing concerns when it comes to the safety of children's products. After conducting nearly 400 telephone interviews, the results showed that around 77% of parents still worry about toy safety. Younger parents between the ages of 18 to 34 are more worried about the possibility of an unsafe toy reaching their kids.

The new toy safety laws that are in effect should make it harder for an unsafe toy to reach the US market. Efforts on the parts of both the toy manufacturers as well as the importers and distributors and organizations like the Consumer Product Safety Commission should help uphold the toy safety standards.

However, because of the newness of the laws, one still has to wait and watch. It still has to be proven this holiday season, that toy safety can be ensured across all levels. Here's hoping for a healthy and happy toy buying season.

As a business owner of an online baby store I can attest to the growing interest of parents regarding the toy safety. I like the fact though that parents get more savvy in what they buy for their children.
