Hot Holiday Toy: Mattel Mindflex Game

Tuesday October 27, 2009

We were watching television last night when a commercial for the new Mattel Mindflex Game (compare prices) came on. Part game, part science fiction, part "what is that?," Mindflex allows you to use your mind to levitate a foam ball.

To be honest, I have not seen the game in person yet, but it looks pretty cool.  There is a headset that you strap on and console that features a different types of hoops, hurdles and funnels that you can arrange however you like.

Once the headset is in place, the object is to alternate between concentrating and relaxing your mind and making the ball move through the obstacles. There is a fan that keeps the ball up in the air, but the movement is up to the player.

Before I buy this game, I think I'd like to see it in action. It sounds great, but does it work? Is it difficult to learn? Will children be frustrated by it? As technology grows and changes, it's fun to see what types of different toys manufacturers come up with -- we've come a long way since Pong!

Have you played Mindflex?

I am curious about the actual science behind this little contraption. Does anyone know where to find an article about how it works? It would be greatly appreciated.
